A well-known site for piracy of anime has ended its days due to issues with its funding method that could not be solved. animekisa was able to receive between 20 and 20 million visits each month. However, its users didn’t want to look at advertisements in large quantities. The site changed to a donation-based model; however, when the users failed to contribute, the site was forced to turn itself off.
Although many of the new pirate websites immediately have a profit interest, getting a site operational is an experience for those with the necessary abilities.The cost-free site could offer rewards other than cash for those who have a disposable income.
Making a community, making new people, and doing something different could result in benefits that money cannot purchase. The reality for the majority is that money isn’t something that grows on trees, and followers’ admiration doesn’t pay for website bills.
AnimeKisa – An Impractical Success Story
The domain was first announced in late 2018, but it took a while before it started to gain momentum. The site offers anime and Japanese animations that people seem to want these days; the website was then able to expand in popularity. The first data on the Wayback Machine indicated that AnimeKisa was looking to raise funds through donations.
“Help to keep us running Ad-Free,” the text used to read, indicating a goal of $150 per calendar month and donations of $60.
If the monthly target was ever met or even exceeded is not known. However, as with other similar platforms, advertisements were eventually added to the website. In most cases, ads can be enough to sustain a website. But in the end, it became evident that the users of AnimeKisa would rather not see a lot of ads, if none at all.
This is a challenge faced by a lot of pirate websites. Although they have relatively low costs, websites must generate at least some revenue. Because most pirates (being pirates) do not want to pay for access to ‘free content, advertisements become an integral part of the commercial model. However, pirates don’t enjoy adverts and so either stop them or place pressure on websites to get them removed.
AnimeKisa Removes Advertising
In an AnimeKisa announcement last week, the site removed all advertisements around the time of its removal. Estimates of traffic from SimilarWeb indicate that the site is well-maintained, with 18 to 21 million monthly visits in 2022. It also has a well-known subreddit and Discord channel for discussions. It’s not enough to make users donate, however.
“If you’ve been around since the beginning of last year you may remember our donation campaign. Since we stopped removing ads one year and a half ago (excluding third-party ads which are difficult to remove) The wallet of AK was drained down. Thanks to your donations , we were able to extend the AK’s existence for a couple of weeks,” the announcement reads.
“It has been 3 long years, it was great while it lasted, but AnimeKisa is never coming back online.”
The closure of the site is reportedly under control. Although it’s impossible to rule out, there isn’t any mention of pressure from outside as an element in the closure of AnimeKisa. Naturally, complaints from copyright owners are not uncommon for pirate websites, and AnimeKisa was no different.
Some entities like MX International, VIZ Media, FUNimation, Aniplex, Madman Entertainment, and Toei have submitted DMCA remove notices to Google in the last few months. They’ll likely continue to issue them even after the platform’s end.
AnimeKisa Clones Are Not Advised
Users seeking an AnimeKisa name on Google will discover many websites bearing similar names. However, the AnimeKisa’s owners caution against using them.
“Copycats of AnimeKisa exist, and they’re usually swarming by the most sexist ads [sicthat are a sham. AnimeKisa could be shutting down, but don’t make use of lower-end copycat sites as there are better alternatives,” they note, providing a list of better alternatives.
The ads displayed on “bottom of the barrel” pirate websites permit them to remain on the internet, but this can be detrimental to the users. Advertisements are often blocked in a variety of situations. Still, it results in less revenue for their operators and an eroding determination to maintain them or even operate.
